Even With Scars, I Will Flourish

Why hello, friends! Yes, I know it's been three months since I wrote a blog post. I decided to pop over to my neighborhood Starbucks to write. When I'm at home I seem to get distracted. Here's my favorite distraction...Gracie!

The past couple of weeks have been rather scary and unpleasant, but the worst is behind me and I'm "on the mend." Sometime between October when I had my yearly mole check, a rainy Seattle Winter and a few sunny vacations, my fair Norwegian skin was damaged. I have had bouts of skin cancer in the past; Melanoma at age 20, a Basal cell a few years ago, and various precancer moles so I am predisposed to abnormal cells.  I get my moles checked once a year and I DO wear sunscreen when I'm on vacation but I don't apply it every day.

I noticed an odd spot on my arm this Spring and made a Dermatologist appointment to have it biopsied. I am proud of myself for being proactive because unfortunately, it turned out to be a Melanoma. My diagnosis led to needing a wide margin removed around the area, and the sentinel lymph node removed for testing.

From the time I was diagnosed until my surgery, it was a mere two weeks. I then waited a
week to get my pathology report to find out if my Cancer had spread. I was so grateful for a good report! Now I'm in the process of healing; still wearing a sling, still having pain, and still waiting for the bandages to be removed and see my new scars.

I heard this new worship song by the band I am They called "Scars" on the radio during the time leading up to my surgery.

"So I'm thankful for the scars
'cause without them I wouldn't
know Your heart
And I know they'll always tell of who You are
So forever I am thankful for the scars."

Rather than focus on my ugly scars (hey, maybe I'll finally get a tattoo someday to hide them), I want to focus on God's goodness and how fortunate I am. I had SO many friends, family members and people that have never met me praying for a good outcome. What a blessing, and I felt covered in love. I will admit I had some anxious moments and sleepless nights while waiting, but I never doubted God was with me and for me. I want to take good care of myself now, and do what I can to prevent future Cancers. Which brings me to the my-one-word I chose back in January...flourish.

A few years ago my Fraternity, Chi Omega, chose flourish as their theme for both undergrads and alumni. Currently, the theme is "sisters on purpose" I love that too!

Photo source: Sorority Sugar on Pinterest
The definition of FLOURISH resonated with me since I want to be used in my home and community to bless others. I'm adopting the bloom where I'm planted mentality. I also found a scripture verse that spoke to me.

Flourish definition:
1. To grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.
"wild plants flourish on the banks of the lake"

synonyms:growthriveprosper, grow/do well, developburgeonincreasemultiplyproliferate;
2. a. to achieve success: Prosper
    b. to be in a state of activity or production
    c. to reach a height of development or influence
3. to make bold and sweeping gestures.

"The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rockand there is no unrighteousness in him." Psalm 92: 12-15

If you have fair skin or suspicious-looking moles or spots, please learn from me. Don't spend too much time sunbathing and get checked out! The American Cancer Society website has a lot of information.

Although I can't do a whole lot of typical summertime activities outside right now due to having my arm in a sling and needing to stay clean and dry, I will be applying my sunscreen, wearing a hat, and seeking an umbrella chair the next time I get to travel to a beach or desert destination. Oh, and using my self-tanner...

Thanks for reading, See Jane Learn!

We Gather, Prepare and Pray~And Eat Too Much on "Fat Tuesday!"

Even though I know God is in control, I admit I still battle fear and anxiety. I learned that one of my favorite bloggers, Maria Furlough, was writing a book about her experience overcoming fear.  I was thrilled to be chosen as part of her Launch team for the book Breaking the Fear Cycle, which is releasing on March 6th and is available for presale. I received my copy early this week and will have much more to share about it soon. I'm almost finished reading it!

Like many people all over the World, we've been hunkered down in front of the TV watching the Olympics. The grit and drive the athletes exhibit is so impressive. The fear they overcome in order to compete and represent their countries is awe-inspiring. Even with all the mental and physical preparation, sometimes the outcome isn't a medal, but an unexpected moment that changes their dream in a split-second.

In the last week, two friends have received news that changed their world in a split-second and fear is involved. No one wants to hear the word; CANCER. Whether it's a routine exam that detects it or advanced tests that confirm it has returned and spread, it is NOT the news that is expected or hoped for. I am not a stranger to hearing that diagnosis.

When you get hard news, what do you do? Well, gathering around the table for lunch and prayer is always a good idea, so yesterday, that's why I hosted a luncheon for my sweet prayer group. Of the five of us, one is a Breast Cancer survivor, one is five treatments away from finishing radiation, and one just got diagnosed and has the battle in front of her. We gathered, prayed, and prepared for the "battle" ahead. Rather than focus on the fear, we are choosing to focus on God's goodness and faithfulness.

Lent begins tomorrow, and it is the goal of my husband and me to use the next 40 days leading up to Easter to focus more on gratitude and less on circumstances.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Phil. 4:4-7

My sweet friend with chickens (and ducks!) brought me a dozen beautiful and unique eggs. Looking at the various sizes and colors was a reminder that although we are all different, with different-sized problems (health issues, job loss, infertility, marriage trouble, etc.) we ALL matter to God and He desires to bring us peace in the midst of our circumstances.

Whatever you're currently facing, I hope you feel peace. Thank you for stopping by "See Jane Learn," and I wish you a very HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY. Let's go spread love and joy!
Easter is coming...

In His Grip,
xo Jane

P.S.
In case you'd forgotten, today is Mardi Gras. "Fat Tuesday" isn't just happening in New Orleans, it's also happening at my house! I enjoyed a plethora of carb-loaded treats at bible study and came home with an extra cookie, scone, and apple fritter. We will attempt to return to healthy eating tomorrow, although it is Valentine's Day. As is our tradition, we made Jambalaya for dinner.

On Fat Tuesday a few years ago I concocted Hurricane cocktails, made Jambalaya and then discovered I had my "night before Lent" Mardi Gras dates mixed up and I was celebrating a week early! I wrote about that here.

What I Learned This Fall: September-November 2017

Oh Alexander, I can relate!

As I write this, my Mom is celebrating her 91st Birthday!! I am thankful that she was born, thankful she met and married my amazing Daddy Vaughn, thankful that she had my two older sisters and me and thankful to have her as my Mama! She is very young-at-heart and it's hard to believe she's been on Earth for 91 years! I choose to believe that my kind qualities come from her! She was a teacher her whole life; to students and her children. She graduated from Depauw University, earned her Masters degree from Ball State and she taught at  College Wood Elementary in Carmel, Indiana from the day the school opened until she retired. She was the BEST 5th-grade teacher ever and she passed on the teaching gene to her three daughters and three of her grandchildren.

(The Story "girls" on my visit this Fall.)

Besides all the lessons I've learned from my Mom, here are some other things that I learned this fall:
1. Some people can sleep with their cats, but not me!
My one-year-old, always hungry, growing daily, red kitty wants to sleep on my pillow on top of my head or on my neck! He makes it difficult for me to breathe, let alone sleep! I can really only snuggle with him when I'm sitting on the couch.  Oh, Thor!

2. I finally figured out how to clean and shine my teapot.
For some reason, when you leave your teapot on a burner while you fry or cook, it gets coated in residue that just won't come off with dish detergent. After years of frustration, I hunted online and found that a paste of baking soda with white vinegar makes a gentle scrub that takes off the gunk and leaves the finish. Thanks, Martha

3. Being a "Great-Aunt" is super fun and gives me a glimpse of how amazing it will be to become a Grandma someday.
Thanks to my nieces and nephews in Indiana, I have nine Greats! I didn't get to see them all on my trip back to the Midwest this Fall, but I did get to see five of them including the two new twin baby girls.

4. Sometimes life gets hard and things change quickly.

I thought my part-time job was always going to be "my spot."  Finding out my hours were being cut was HARD. Throughout my adult years, I have spent time as a waitress, teacher, full-time Mama, and sales clerk at the baby boutique. What's next? It's time to start hitting the pavement and find my next $pot.

We knew my husband's job was probably going to end. (I'm proud that he hung in there as long as he did! ) When it really happened a few weeks ago, it was HARD.

When our five-year-old front-loader washing machine stopped working and even with the new part wouldn't work, that was ANNOYING. My sweet friend let me use her home like a laundromat until our new top-loader was delivered. Thanks again Dawn!!

Deciding to sell our dream home was HARD! Not knowing if it's the right solution has us awake at night. I'll let you know what we decide... Which leads me to #5.

5. TMJ is a THING and I have it!

Headaches. Every day. All day and night. I have been trying to rule out the causes. My doctor sent me to an ENT, Ophthalmologist, MRI and guess what I found out at the Dentist this week?... I have TMJ and my pain is exactly like the picture below. I wish I had found this article months ago! I suffer from all of it. I could be the girl in this photo!

So...I'm now going to be wearing my night guard, taking Advil every four hours, and applying moist heat. (Not sure about the don't speak too much and don't bite your nails mentioned in this article.) Perhaps my stress level is through the roof?...

6. Do you want to become a minimalist? Put your house on the market!

We actually got our home "on the market" one week after we made the decision. I sped through each room, pulling items to get rid of. Some things were boxed up and are stored in our garage. Daily trips to Goodwill happened. My bible study friends got used to me schlepping in bags of "stuff" for them to look at. Two of my best friends did a walk-through and advised me what else I needed to remove to make our home look VERY uncluttered and tidy. Then, the deep cleaning began...

I really miss my family photos and "GOD is Good" artwork, but other than that, everything left "sparks joy" as in Marie Kondõ's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

If you're serious about decluttering and purging, you might want to check out a book coming out next month called The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter by Margareta Magnusson that I discovered while looking around on Amazon. Basically, the premise is "Let's not leave our cr__ for our family members to deal with." I can't believe some of the stuff I've been saving!

Perhaps I need to write a book on how this transplanted Midwest-turned-PNW-recovering-sentimental-hoarder is learning how to say goodbye to stuff?!

For those of you who have read my posts this month, I don't really have an update on my current situation. Are we selling? Moving? Finding jobs?

I've always loved Fall, this year's Fall just hasn't been my favorite. Alexander in the book at the top had a terrible, horrible, very bad day, and I've been feeling like we've sort of had a very bad month. I DO know God knows and sees and has a plan, and so we will just continue praying for wise decisions that are God-honoring.

I am linking up to Emily P. Freeman from Chatting at the Sky. Enjoy!
Only 25 more days until Christmas!! Let the joyful merriment celebrating Jesus begin!

xo Jane

Cheers to Me!

It's day 30 of My Whole 30 "adventure." I made it to the finish line! Think of the tortoise in "The Tortoise and the Hare" story.  Some moments were REALLY hard and I wanted to quit. It got easier. I learned to survive without dairy, legumes, grains, sugar, soy and alcohol. I learned to order "compliant" food off restaurant menus. I am really conscious of reading labels now, and wanting to eat food in it's "clean" and natural state.

I wasn't perfect, but pretty darn close. There might have been a tiny bit of sugar in a restaurant's Balsamic salad dressing, I realized I had bread and juice during Communion (I just feel confident that God understands) and I did cheat once and have half a glass of red wine with my son who was home visiting. Not only did I feel guilty, but it was underwhelming.

If you read any of my posts over the last month, (I'll link them below) then you'll remember I wasn't super committed at the starting line. I found myself participating before I had prepared myself mentally, or my kitchen physically. But...I did it. I read lots of articles, watched some You Tube videos, tried LOTS of recipes (mostly found on Pinterest) and just kept going.

I will do my best to slowly reintroduce the foods I've abstained from, but it could be a little tricky following the suggested plan while in Napa! I head to the airport soon for my rendezvous and weekend getaway with my husband. I'll hopefully take some wonderful pictures and will share some of our favorite spots in a future post.

I finally stepped on the scale this morning and it says I lost 12 pounds. Yay! My clothes are fitting better and  I'm sure I lost some inches, but I never measured...

Will I ever do this program again? Maybe...but probably not. I will be adopting lots of the healthy habits I learned. Do I recommend others try it? YES! If you have bad habits that you'd like to break, and want to get serious about losing weight and getting healthy. I think having to give up SO many foods helps you stay focused and committed.  I learned to say no and use willpower

I nibbled on nuts while my bible study friends enjoyed a delicious quiche... I even sat across from my husband (who started the plan five days before me) while he had a glass of wine and chocolate mousse for dessert and I didn't cry or whine... Congrats to him!

If you want to find out more, you can check out  the official website. and I found this very informative article written by "Preventative" magazine that I wish I'd read 30 days ago,

So enough about that... Here's a recap on what's been going on in my little corner of the world:

  • My ugly, bloody eye isn't completely healed, but it's much better.
  • The air quality here in Washington State is horrible-so smokey from the fires up in Canada. The sun appears orange and it's uncomfortable to be outside for long.
  • Our dry-spell has reached about 54 days without rain.
  • I'm thrilled to discover that both our daughters will be given there own classrooms to teach in, rather than having to fit into a corner of  another teacher's room, or wheel around a cart.
  • It's MUCH more fun to watch "Chesapeake Shores" on the Hallmark channel, then the depressing, scary news on "NBC." Season two started Sunday night. Make sure you watch season one first.
  • I need to purchase the "Nasa-approved" protective glasses to be ready for the Solar Eclipse on the 21st!

With the unsettling news about North Korea and possible missiles, I choose to focus on my family, health, friends, choosing joy, and remaining confident that the one who created this Earth and ALL the people, is still in control!

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
John 14:27

Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend! I'll be in the Vineyards... Cheers!

See Jane Keep Going

I am half-way through doing the Whole 30 Diet. I'm proud of me! One of my sweet friends decided to join in the "fun" and started the program yesterday. I wish her much luck much success and patience! I think a few people who know me well (and my eating and drinking habits) decided "If Jane can do it, anybody can..."

"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You are not your own." 1Corinthians 6:19 NLT

I was surprised that even as I walked the aisles of our healthy "Main and Vine" store the other night and Trader Joe's yesterday with list in hand, HOW MUCH STUFF THAT I CAN'T EAT!

BUT...I am doing OK. I am not cheating, haven't really been craving anything in particular and when I look down at my tummy, it doesn't look like I'm 7 months pregnant anymore! I've got a whole new food vocabulary and over the weekend we made some delicious dinners including shrimp and vegetables with avocado pesto sauce over zucchini "zoodles."

Here's a look at the stash I brought home from TJ's. The Garlic Herb Chicken Sausages were very tasty, and the flowers were a "just because we need to enjoy simple pleasures."  $1.99 for Orange Gladiolus was a steal! They go great with the pink ones I cut that are growing out in our front yard.

I promised I would talk about my unhealthy eating habits sometime, so here you go! I'm a child of the 60's and 70's, and both my parents worked full-time from the time I was in second grade. That said, meal preparation was a combination of a tight budget, and not a lot of time! Keep in mind, I was raised in the Midwest...we ate differently than families do here in the PNW. I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

My Growing-Up Years:
Typical Breakfasts: Poptarts, cereal, Instant Breakfast shakes, Hawaiian Punch, Eggs, Pancakes or Waffles on the weekends.
Typical lunches: school lunches, peanut butter or bologna and cheese sandwiches, Pringles, snack puddings and fruit, Hostess treats for field trips.
Dinnertime: LOTS of casseroles, cube steaks, iceberg lettuce with homemade thousand island dressing (mayonnaise and ketchup) and canned vegetables. We didn't eat out much but when we did it was a Friday night at Pizza Hut!

College:
Whoa. I gained more than the "freshman ten." I really took advantage of the Dorm cafeteria buffet line. If I didn't like the main course I could always make a P and J sandwich followed by the ice cream machine for dessert. My besties and I ordered LOTS of Dominos pizzas and helped the Frat boys drink their kegs. Self-control towards food and drink just hasn't been in my "make-up."

I need to give a shout-out to my freshman college roommate and Chi Omega sister, (Cathy Marx) Catherine Ebeling RN BSN. She wrote the book The Flat-Belly Kitchen: Superfoods For A Flat Stomach: Lose 2-3 Inches From Your Belly in Less Than A Month. Many of her recipes are Whole 30 Compliant, and I will definitely be incorporating her meals into my life in the future.

Raising my Family:
I did get a grip on my weight after college/before my wedding and went a bit up and down with four pregnancies. Fresh food DOES cost more, and while we were raising our four kids we were pinching pennies and just trying to fill their tummies. I bought LOTS OF BOXES; macaroni and cheese, Stovetop stuffing, frozen pizza, etc. I love that despite their childhood lack of great nutrition they've learned to be healthy eaters as young adults. Menopause has not been my friend. Enough said.

Before I began this Whole 30 Program:
Wine. Lots of wine. Crackers and cheese, Greek Yogurts, English muffins and peanut butter, Blue Cheese dressing, BIG portions, burgers and fries, Teriyaki chicken and fried rice, pasta, French Bread and butter, desserts, ice cream, Margaritas with lots of chips and salsa. You get the idea...not a lot of self-control.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.Galatians 5:22

Some reflections after 15 days:

  • It does gets easier to be around friends who are enjoying wine while I'm sipping a La Croix. It's sometimes entertaining!
  • My energy has improved and I haven't had a headache in two weeks.
  • I haven't weighed myself (following the rules) but my pants are looser and my husband has lost 11 pounds (he cheated and weighed himself.)
  • Lots of people have "Whole 30" stories~it's a community.
  • I don't yawn as much. (My friends noticed.)
  • I wish the restaurant "Flower Child" wasn't only in California, Texas and Arizona!
  • Fresh, clean, Paleo-type food really is better for us and does NOT come in "boxes."
  • Even though it can be frustrating to discover all the things I CAN'T have, there are lots of interesting options.
Some Tips:
  • Do not drink a Kombucha at night. I won't be having it again for the next two weeks. Sources say it has sugar (the devil!) Apparently it has natural caffeine and I was awake half the night!
  • Spicy V8 and cashews and almonds or an apple really tide me over at work.
  • There are TONS of resources online (especially Pinterest recipes.)
  • Give away all your Dairy and Bread to friends.
  • Clean out your refrigerator and freezer of non-compliant foods and put them in a garage freezer if you have one.
  • Hide all your wine and spirits in the closet. (Out of sight, out of mind.)
There are a few places around my Harbor Town I really miss going to, just to enjoy the gorgeous view while sipping a glass of Vino. (Hang in there Jane, just two more weeks!) Plus...Napa Valley is only fourteen days away!!

Here's the Truth

Happy weekend friends! Our town has an annual art festival happening downtown, so we wandered down the hill. Did I mention how much I love living downtown? In ten minutes we can walk to our "main drag" on the waterfront! But then we have to walk back up...

I am being challenged right now. My daughter decided to do the month-long eating program called Whole 30 and my husband wanted to encourage her and be an accountability partner, so he chose to do it too.

I want and need to lose weight. I need to curb my sugar addiction. But~there's a part of me who has NEVER wanted to do this program. Giving up ALL dairy and bread? NO alcohol?! I've gone without wine during my four pregnancies, haven't I already done my "Time?" It's just not much fun for summertime and socializing. They claim they can change my life...

If I don't continue than I'll be a "quitter." I don't want to be a quitter and I want to prove to my family and myself that I can DO this, but I don't WANT to!! I feel a bit like Paul in Romans 7:19
"I want to do what is good, but I don't. I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway."

I was on a bit of a rant Thursday. Usually I'm a cheerful person and try to say encouraging things. That day however, I found myself out-of-sorts. I accompanied my husband and one of his co-workers on an overnight business trip to Portland because...why not? I had two days off work, I love Portland, free hotel stay and I could see my friend who happens to be my daughter-in-law's Mom!

What I learned is that Portland is not the place to go if you are on a strict budget AND attempting the Whole 30 eating program. After my black coffee, eggs and bacon, I started my window shopping since I had two hours to kill. First I headed over to Nordstrom to see the Anniversary Sale. Now WHY did I think that was a good idea? Even the mark-downs weren't in the family budget! Besides, I'm trying to become more of a minimalist so more stuff isn't the answer. Oh but the shoes... so many cute ones! Do you check out their annual sale?

As I walked around the downtown area all I could see were food trucks and restaurants containing things I couldn't eat or drink. (There was also lots of construction.) I had cheated the night before and had a glass of wine (Oregon Pinot Noir!) so I was determined to stay focused. I had a salad and chicken, then Ubered over to meet my friend for Pedicures and to catch up. The salon (Rex) was lovely and we had fun sans food or drink.

I discovered an hour later that my sandal had totally moofed (is that a word?) my big toe polish. Boo! By the time we made it back to the Harbor after spending three hours in heavy traffic I was DONE. (Ask my poor friends who actually sat with us while we gobbled our appropriate food down at a local spot around 9:00 p.m.) Note to our waitress: Next time, do not make a cranky mama wait 45 minutes for her SALAD when she's had a rough day and is hangry~your tip will be low and you're lucky I didn't yell!

As I contemplate the "should I quit the Whole 30 plan and just cut back on most things??", I'm reminded of one thing I successfully completed this summer and it took way more than 30 days.

I watched all seven seasons of "Pretty Little Liars!"

The show is described as "Four friends band together against an anonymous foe who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, while unraveling the mystery of the murder of their best friend."
I know, it's ridiculous that I got sucked in as a 50 year old mama (yep, I'm now 57) but it was addictive. At the time it started, I had just moved to a new town in Illinois and my daughter and I enjoyed watching it together. It was totally out of my normal genre of shows, was totally unbelievable, had millions of text messages, and didn't exactly follow my beliefs and values. They touched on the topic of sexual orientation which definitely wasn't my favorite part, but I kept watching to find out who "A" was! My daughter Sarah stopped watching...I did not. NO ONE else I knew watched it, so I didn't have anyone to talk to about it!

I was a bit blown-away by how the writers wrapped things up.  I won't spoil it for you in case you'd like to binge watch it on Netflix. The fashion and beauty were always fun to see, lots of twists, Ezra was quite good-looking, coffee was always involved, cocktails once they turned 21, and ALWAYS loyal friendship. Through thick or thin, the girls stuck together. (Well, except toward the end of the series.)

While we were in Los Angeles last Fall we went on the Warner Brothers back lot tour.  I'm still recovering from learning that the towns of Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls) and Rosewood (Pretty Little Liars) are the same sets with the Chapel removed. What??!!

I have a group of friends I do life with, and we send a lot of group text messages. We however, don't lie and we do a lot of praying together. We ALL need friends to encourage us, love on us, and hold us accountable.

"You use steel to sharpen steel,
    and one friend sharpens another."
Proverbs 27:17 MSG

Back to the Whole 30 issue... besides my family, I do have friends who have done this program and survived. Also, I suppose if I want to look like the cast of Pretty Little Liars, I should embrace the Whole 30 eating plan?

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

To be continued...

P.S. If you ever watch PLL, let me know who your favorite character was, and if you were surprised by the conclusion.

In His Grip,
Jane
